New Angles

We've all seen pictures of cars speeding along a road, but usually we are left as observers as the car speeds on past.

In this shot, by Erik Refner, we are part of the scene, part of the party. The drama is communicated through the streaking road and its surroundings, created by a slow shutter speed of 1/30 sec, showing us how fast the car is going.

Refner has captured this atmosphere by taking the picture from another car driving in front of the one we see in the picture. As both are travelling at about the same speed the car in the picture looks sharp and clear against the moving background.

Time of day is key too. The low sunset light gives the picture plenty of impact and makes the dust glow behind the car. Don't try this one while driving yourself - and don't lean too far out of the window to get the shot.
